- The school opened as a Provisional School, the opening date probably being the 19th September 1898 as in 1900 Inspector William Cornish wrote that Herbert Burgess, 'has been in charge of this Provisional School since 19th Sept. 1898.'
- Twenty-one-year-old Herbert Burgess was appointed as the schools first teacher on 10 September 1898
- Having been appointed to Bilambil he travelled to Grafton from where his journey continued by boat to Chatsworth, by coach to Woodburn, by boat to Lismore, by rail to Murwillumbah, by boat to Tumbulgum, by ferry to North Tumbulgum, and then by buggy to Bilambil!
