The school currently has over 300 students, most of whom travel down by bus from the surrounding hills of the suburban and rural areas of Bilambil.
This year has been a celebration of the school's 100 year history. The main Centenary celebrations occurred on the long weekend in June with a full three days of activities including a Centenary Celebration Day, a Reunion Dinner and a Centenary Church Service in the school assembly hall. The weekend was attended by a very large number of past and present pupils and staff with their families. In addition, 1998 has seen the publication of a Centenary Book containing the historical information used as a basis for the preceeding pages. A centenary garden has been decorated with tiles handpainted by students, families, ex-pupils and staff and a centenary mural has been painted.
During 1998, the school has continued to offer high quality programs in English, Mathematics, Science, Indonesian, Visual Art & Craft and PD, Health and PE. The school again entered in the local area Public Speaking and Debating competitions successfully. A number of students also entered the Australian Schools English, Mathematics, Science and Computer Competitions run by the University of NSW. The school band continues to grow and Miss Hodge (the current Principal) has continued with her signing group. As in years gone by, Bilambil continues to place great emphasis on sport. This year has seen special baseball training for senior students, as well as the usual interschool matches and competitions. Again many students have reached area and district levels and some have reached state level.
Special programs undertaken during 1998 include the K-6 Swimming Program, StreamWatch, a Greening Program and a Worm Farm and Recycling Program. Technology Training specialising in the Internet has been undertaken by all staff and students and buddy tutors organised so all students 1-6 can access the Internet. A school website has been developed to introduce staff and students to information available on the Internet with plans to include student projects in the near future.
CELEBRATING OUR SCHOOL, ITS HISTORY AND THE SESQUICENTENARY OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN NEW SOUTH WALES
As Bilambil celebrates its centenary year in 1998, we would like to pass on our best wishes to the other schools across Australia who were also established in 1898. A vintage year!
... And to all involved in the sesquicentenary. Have fun! |
