Of lantana and repairs
ENCROACHING LANTANA

WorkmanFollowing complaints about lantana taking over the school ground, Inspector William McCoy reported on 3 September 1906, ‘This school site is 2 acres in extent about 1/3 of an acre being cleared and the remainder standing scrub. The teacher has recently formed a flower garden and plots for experimental agriculture which are protected by a fence erected by the pupils.’1 Tenders were called for the clearing work at this time but they were considered too high and fresh tenders were called in the following year after a further complaint.1

TreesThe work was then done by S.R. Charles of Bilambil who did a thorough job and had finished it by December 1909.1 In February of the following year however the then teacher, Charles Moffitt, wrote to Inspector Alexander Noble,
‘The contract of brushing and grubbing lantana was let to Mr Charles for £9.0.0. The opinion of neighbours is that the contract was done splendidly, but lantana requires grubbing three or four times before it is banished. ’1 Late in 1911 John McCormack was paid £9.0.0 for brushing and grubbing the lantana on the school site.1

J SuterREPAIRS

Repairs and improvements including the provision of five window shades were carried out at the school in 1910 for £4.10.0 by local resident John Suter, who had done many building jobs at the school.1 He was the only local carpenter and often did building jobs in Brisbane.1
