The sandhill dunnart is only known to occur in a couple of restricted locations in South Australia and Western Australia. Mostly it occurs in desert but it was also recorded from the northern portion of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia in the wheatbelt. CALM has been conducting a long-term study of the role of fire in the desert at Queen Victoria Spring Nature Reserve in the Great Victoria Desert of WA. About 15 sandhill dunnarts have been caught there since 1987 in thousands of trap nights (a very low capture rate). Much of current knowledge comes from this work. It is summarised in Strahan (1995) Mammals of Australia available at most local libraries. More recently SA and WA scientists have been funded by the Federal Government to conduct further survey work to locate new populations. This work is due to commence in coming months.
