| Year 5 Port Lincoln Primary I'm far away from home and I'm qite alone. I'm feeling rather weary and the land is quite dreary. I had a scare when I went by air. The foxes growled and snapped and I felt trapped. I bounced to the west and avoided the best. The foxes are quick and the cats are slick. I think I'll stay for a day, grab a girl then say goodbye with a twirl. Grant Jones |

| Seaforth State School I should go home and visit my family and tell them about the other bilbies and then I could go back to the colony of bilbies and mate with the female bilbies. When the babies are old enough I could go back home and stay with my family. After all the rain they had there would be enough food. From Kevin Cahill Year Five I think I should go back home and tell my family about my trip because I promised them that I'll tell them if there are any bilbies left. After that I'll tell them about the bilby colony.I'll tell them that I want to go back to the colony and breed. From Ruby Costigan I think I should go back home because, what if there are wild animals near my family . Such as wild cats and feral dogs. I will go home and see if my family is alive. From Tonie Bust I would stay for a while until my strength was in good shape. Then I would go and find my parents. But they might not be alive. If they're not alive I will come back and stay. But if they are alive I would ask if they would like to come back to the New Bilby Colony. From Brendan Peters I have decided to go back to my family because I think that it's pretty mean to promise to go back to your family in 3 years, and not come back at all. If my family was dead than I would have to go back. If they are alive, and if they agree,I'd take them back to the other bilby colony. If they don't wont to go back to the other colony then I'd ask the eagle Ethabuka to tell the other colony that I won't be coming back, but some day I might visit them. from Jane Williams. I have been thinking about my decision. I think I should stay with the colony of Bilbies for a while and after mating I could go back to my family. But they might not be alive because it's been raining and rain brings foxes and cats. Also rain makes the gass grow and the food supply would be better so I might go back home. from Stacey Worthington I think I should take some of the adult bilbies from the large colony back to my home in Queensland. Ask if Tulka, Yelyenda and Paraputcheri want to come back to the large colony so we can all breed. From Megan Smith. I think I should stay at the new colony because if go back my family may not know me anymore. From Zac Scott |

Year 3 All Saints Anglican School Year 3 students at All Saints Anglican School decided that Walpiri should return to his own colony and take his family and the rest of the colony back to live with the new colony. That way he will be able to share all the knowledge he's picked up on his travels with both of the colonies. The children thought the Red Kangaroos might be able to help transport them all in their pouches and they might even have some joeys to keep them company. When Walpiri gets back to his own colony he might say something like this: I've been to the North I've been to the South I've been to the East and out to the West And I think I've found the place that could be the best. In the West where I ended my quest I found another Bilby colony that have the perfect place for a nest. We hope you like it |
| Eudlo State School I would stay with the new bilby colony I have found, as my family is probably dead and it's a very long journey back. If I stay here though, I will be able to breed with one of the female bilbies and if I have any male young they would be able to reproduce too. This would help our population greatly. Yours sincerely Walp |

SS Walpiri should go back to his family the smae way he came. He should take them to where the other bilbies are. Then he could breed and have babies. Walpiri's family could all travel safely in the kangaroos' pouches, on the backs of emus or on eagles' wings, just like Walpiri did. From George |
|
| St John's School Richmond Walpiri could send one of his good friends the red kangaroos to go home and see if his family is alive and come back and tell Walpiri. If they are dead Walpiri can mate with the females. Josh If I was Walpiri I would go back and have a good look
for my family and if they were trapped I would save them. Then I would go back to
the other bilbies. If they were in trouble then I would help them. The reason
I would do this is because your family is in more danger. |

This is Grade 4/5/6 from Orford primary School in Tasmania. Here are
some of our thoughts on Rap Point 3, from Walpiri's point of view... I think that I should stay with the new bilbies. They have made me feel very welcome. If I set off and tried to find my family they could be dead. It would take me a long time to get there and I could get lost very easily. If I stayed, then I could make a new family. My new friends only have old male bilbies there. So when the old male bilbies die, there will be nobody left to mate with the females if I go. From Emma Sullivan If I was Walpiri I would go home because his family needs him, espesily if old Tulka is the only one left who could look after them. Walpiri has the responsibility of reporting back to his family. That is why they sent him on his quest in the first place. They might never know what happened to him. If the last thing that he wants is to have a fight then he should leave and go and find his home and protect his family from all the wild animals and enemies. All his experience travelling can only be useful. He can help teach other bilbies in his family about what he has learnt and how they can protect themselves. Even though he has travelled very far and he is tired, he will recover soon with some rest and then if he doesn't go back he will always wonder what happened to his own family. Walpiri, your family needs you. by Jennifer Hennessy I think that I should stay with the group I found. Because if I go my family might be dead and I could get killed trying to get back. If I stay with the group I could breed with the females and they will have babies. If I am not sure about my decision I could try to call the eagle Ethabuka and ask him to go to where my family lives and see if they are alive. It would be much easier for him to fly than for me to walk. If they aren't dead I could stay with the new family I found. If they are alive I could get Ethabuka to take me home. from Brooke Johnson If I was Walpiri I would stay in the new bilby mound because if my family was dead it would be a total waste of time for me to travel back and in that time I could be making babies and that would be good. Another reasion I would not go there would be because there would now be cattle and other animals at home and home wouldn't be the same again. A lot has happened in three years. From Kristy-Lee Woolnough If I was Walpiri I would stay with the bilbies who invited me to stay in their bilby mound. Why? I could get injured when I was on my way home or just trying to find my family. If the cattle, foxes, dingoes or feral cats are nearby they could injure me or even kill me. It would be a very dangerous journey. I think I would be safer with my new friends and maybe I would become a dad and have babies. If I do decide to leave I think I should take another bilby with me. Lea McGinniss Here are some
more solutions from Orford Primary School. |

Orford Primary School Raps If I was Walpiri I would stay with the other family of bilbies because if I went back my own family might be dead. If they were I would be the only bilby there and I would be lonely. If I stayed with the bilbies I'm with now I wouldn't be lonely. My family probably are dead and I will probably hear of them soon from some of my animal friends who are more mobile than me. If they are still alive I can go back and see them. If they are dead I would choose to stay here in the west. From Meegan If I was Walapiri this is what I would have done... I looked at all the females. My family would probably be dead anyway. If I stayed with all the females I would be helping my species survive. I thought about this problem for a while and then decided I would stay with them because the journey to my parents and family was too far away If it had been raining there would be other animals there and I could get killed for nothing. So I would stay with the females and have more bilbies. from Lucy If I was walapiri I would stay in the one spot and be a part of a new family. If I did go back to look for my friends I would be risking my life. by Luke I reckon I should stay with the new colony, because I do not know if my family still is alive. In this colony I probably would not live in danger and if I am helping to make babies maybe bilbies would not die out. by Steffen If I was Walpiri, I would stay with the other bilbies in the west and the reason why I would stay with the bilbies, instead of going to see if my family is still alive, is that it will be such a long journey home to find my family. It could take me another three years just to get back and then I will be old for a bilby. If I stay here I can help all the bilbies be saved from dying out. by Kathryn |

| Our class, 5.1, at Crestmead State School has come up with the following solutions. 1 I am going to stay with the female colony because if I go back to my family they might not be alive and I might get lost coming back to the female colony. I may also be too old to breed when I get back to the colony. Of course I would like to see my family and see how they are getting along. 2 Hi! This is Walpiri. Ive been taken deep into the desert by a red kangaroo. I think Ill stay here for a while and mate with some of the females and have babies. Then Ill take some of them back the way I came, in the pouch of a red kangaroo. I am worried about my family. The only reason that Im staying here now is because I dont know for sure that my family is alive. 3 Ive made the decision to stay here and make new friends. In a few years time I will go back and see if my family is alive and well. 4 I am going to go back and take these bilbies with me in the pouches of red kangaroos so I can see my family. We can start a breeding program to increase our population. 5 I have decided that I should stay here because I dont want these bilbies to die out. I can ask the red kangaroos to take a message to my family saying that I wont be away forever. 6 I have thought of an idea. These bilbies have decided to come with me and we will travel back to Curica Creek together. I thought of sending the kangaroos back to my home with a message for my family saying Ill be back in a few years with the rest of the bilbies but I not sure I can find the kangaroos right now. |

| 5.2 at Crestmead State School has read and
discussed in groups this dilemma that Walpiri faces. Here are some of our ideas. *We think that the bilby should go back home where it belongs. It should go back because his family would miss him. Within his family group, he would always have food and someone to protect him. If he was to stay in the place where he is staying now, he would feel lonely and miss his family and his family may come looking for him and they might die along the way. * Walpiri should go and take the risk of going back to see if his family is still alive and if so bring them back to his new friends so he and his brothers can mate with the females. The old male bilbies should stay and protect the females while Walpiri is on his journey. * Walpiri should make a group of five or six bilbies and take them back to his family, so the family will get larger. If he is in danger he will have help. If Walpiri doesnt go back he might die because he is not with his family. He could also ask a red kangaroo to carry some food for the bilbies and himself. *We think the best solution is to stay where he is because he might drown in the water or his family might be already dead. Where he is at the moment he can breed because he is the youngest male and there are only old males there. If he goes back to his family he is risking his life. There is also the chance that the colony will die out. * I have decided to stay at this new place. There is plenty of food here, protection and its a long way back home. I will miss my family. |

| Springfield Primary I am Walpiri I think that I will lookafter the old people and breed and as soon as I am pregnant my husband will go and fetch my family and when and we can raise some money and have a fair and make a map were the bilbys live and sell it and build a tuck shop and you can also let people come and see Walpiri and they can pay if they want to see Walpiri. That is the way you can make toys, like Walpiri toys and can make a cake sale. and also the bilby can be on television and every month. Catherine C I don t care. I would go back to my Mom and Dad through the hard way. I think he should stay with the new family and have more Walpiris and not go a long way home he needs a new change so maybe he can contact Jackson and tell him to back tee shirts that say save the BILBIES or he could go back to his family. and take Mom and dad and sister and brother to the new cling and have more bilbies and so they can all be to gether and thay might wont to back a new big family and live happily ever after and have a nice life from Lisa C. I am Walpiri I think I should stay with this new family. They can mate and make more Walpiris and a lot more babies then they can fight the foxes. Micaela L I am Walpiri: I think I should send an eagle to find my family. If he finds my family with some babies he can bring them to and then we can live all together and I can have many Walpiri babies. from Jordan. Dear Jane and Jackson To make the bilbies feel at home. I think you should raise money at a bilby fair or a tuck shop. Maybe a bilbies puppet show. I should go back to my family Maybe Walpiri can contact Jackson and tell him to organise to make some t-shirts and on the t- shirts will say save the BILBIES and with that money they can save up for a new colony of bilbies in Australia. From Marie-Louise. I am Walpiri and I love my family very very much and I will never leave them alone to die. I would go back to them and and maybe I can try to get held of Jackson and tell he to contact a man that makes t-shirt that's says "I love bilbys " from Chelsea. I am Walperri I've travelled a long way now to get home but suddenly I get to a colony. Well I suppose it would be ok to stay there. But I would prefer to go home to my family where all my friends and family so my answer is to go on with my journey and continue with all the things that I have done and try my hardest to keep alive and try my best to not get hungry. So that I can go to my family and friends. So that I can live happily ever ever after . Lisa K. I am Walpiri and I would go back and fetch my family and take them to the colony. I could breed and have babies and then I would go and see if they are all alive and if they are I would take them to the colony. From Ceara Mc I am Walpiri and I would go back and fetch my family and take them to the colony. I could breed and have babies and then I would go and see if they are all alive and if they are I would take them to the colony . From Ceara Mc Dear Jackson my friend and I have a few ideas to raise money to protect and save the bilbies from extinction. Springfield could help raise lots of money to build a bilby farm and to help the species. You could also sell t-shirts, cookies, chocolates, hats, painted plates and you could make post cards on the computer and you could sell pot plants and have a bilby fete. For Christmas you could make Christmas cards with little bilbies singing Christmas carols and you could get those plastic bags and you could put sweets in it and sell it and with that money you could buy a Christmas tree with bilby ornaments on it . lots of care Lisa K and Christie J. I am Walpiri and I think I am going to stay with this friendly new colony of Walpiries. and make more Walpiris and lots of Babies and I can make a new family and new friends and play with them. and fed my Babies maybe Jane and Jackson could raise money by starting a tuck shop and making many kinds of things like: rolls and boerewors, toasted cheese and thats how you can make money and buy the walpiries food to eat and you can buy them toys to play with them and by them when they are sick ten bane and Jackson can bring your family with you and chats what think. Katherine. |

| Marsden State School G'day Rappers Walpiri should go back to his family for about a week and say good-bye and tell them why he must return to the other bilby colony. Brett and Julie-Ann , Queensland, Australia. G'day again Mrs Vickers groups have talked about what we can do to help keep Walpiri (Macrotis Lagotis) from becoming "extinct". The students discussed...

| Our Lady of the Assumption Most of our class thinks that Walpiri should stay, but send the kangaroo or eagle to check on his family. The others thought that Walpiri should go back to his family as he is on a quest and the quest does not finish until he returns to his starting point. A couple of students suggested he could take a female back with him. You could say Walpiri is "on the horns of a dilemma". From Rachel, Rebecca, Eden, David, Bernard. |

| Bucklands Beach Primary School - Auckland We think that Walpiri should stay at the bilby mound because if he tried to go back home, his family might be dead and he might die on the way back. Also if Walpiri didn't stay at the bilby mound that group could die without many male bilbies. If Walpiri's family were dead then bilbies could become extinct. From Monique,Helen and Nathanael. We think that Walpiri should send a message with the kangaroos to his family that says "I have found some other Bilbies in Western Australia so come on over." Or he could go with the other Bilbies to where his family is. from Alan,Josh and Craig |

| Woodhill State School Jordan and Elizabeth think that Walpiri should find a female and mate with her. When the babies get bigger take them back to where Walpiri came from and dig bilby mounds. Ben and Jason think that Walpiri should stay with his friends because if his family is dead he will be by himself. He could be in danger from foxes, feral cats, dingoes and other predators. Stephen thinks that Walpiri should go to his family because he misses them alot and come back if he cannot find them. From the Woodhill rappers. |

| Seaforth State School I would stay with the other Bilbies because you could get home and your family might already be dead. Not only that you have met some new Bilbies and they want you to stay. You might get home and regret it so I would just stay with the other Bilbies. Yours sincerely Daina Owens I would go back and stand from a distance and have a look at home and if my family was there there I will stay. But if they aren't there I will go back and make a family at my other home. Yours sincerely Cody Goodale I should stay in Western Australia and mate. The roos said that it's been raining and there will probably be lots of green and tasty food there. If my family has forgotten me they will probably challenge me to a fight. If they do I will have to go back to Western Australia. Yours sincerely Rebecca Sullivan. I'm Walpiri and I think I should go after mating and when the babies are strong enough. Also after the rain there might be more food and you could help fend off enemies plus the more bibies you have the easier it would be to get them out of there. If they're not there you could go back to the colony. Your sincerely Patrick Skerman |
