"The wedge-tail eagles soared with Walpiri over vast desert plains,
south to the Great Australian Bight."

~ The Further Adventures of Walpiri ~

You are Walpiri. After escaping from the cement cage
near the beach, your friend Ethabuka, the wedge-tail eagle
takes you far south to a lush valley full of dense vegetation.

Betania Creek runs through a valley and looks like it’s in flood.
Although it is sad to say goodbye to Ethabuka, you are happy
to be on the ground again. It has been raining, something you’re
not used to, so you seek shelter during the day and
rest in some nearby caves.

At night you explore the caves (and eat a few mice and grass seeds).
You find three caves - all big enough for a human to clamber
through and possibly your old enemies the fox and feral cat.
You pine for the safety of your spiral burrow but make
the most of a bad situation.

Suddenly your acute hearing and sense of smell pick up fox.
The rain has worked against you as you hear the sound
of two foxes scurrying in the darkness outside.
You can’t see them (never did have good eyesight) but your
ears and nose let you know the story. Hiding deeper in the cave you desperately try to burrow into the pebbly sandy soil but hit rock.

You have no choice.
You have to come up with a solution and before sunrise
when you are sure to be found as foxes have excellent eyesight.
Please also share the solutions you rejected and explain
why they were rejected.

Good luck!
(The best suggestions will be displayed on this web site).
Here is a photo of a cave similar to the one in which you
(Walpiri) are hiding.
NB: Betania Creek
is about an hour north-east of Melbourne.
