Mathematics is studied by every student at Corrimal High School. Special courses are available to students including:
Tthis course has been designed to meet the needs of students who have no intentoin of proceeding to tertiary studies and is a natural extension of the General Course in Mathematics for Years 9 and 10 .
This course is designed for those students whose main interests lie in the non-mathematical direction. The course is of a more practical and relevant and is more appropriate to the needs of many students. It is not intended that students taking this course would undertake mathematical studies in the future.
The basic aim of this course is to show the usefulness of mathematics through its application in a variety of areas.
There are three sections to this course:
1. Basic knowledge, skill and their application.
2. Core topics
3. Option topics (personal finance, Mathematics in construction, land and Time Measurement, Mathematics of chance and gambling,Computers, Elementary coastal navigations, Space mathematics).
Section 1 and 2 are compulsory for all students. A minimum of four options Topics will be selected by the class teachers and tbe students (2 in the preliminary course and 2 in the H.S.C course).
The 2 unit course is for students with mathematical ability who will need Mathematics for their tertiary studies. Those students who have not performed well in mathematics in year 10 would find this course extremely difficult and accordingly are advised not to attempt it. In particular, students who have not attempted the Advanced course or who have not received a grade A at Intermediate level have little chance of success in this course.
The 3 unit course should be attempted by all students proposing further tertiary study in Science-Maths-Enginering based Subjects.
An additional course 4 Unit Mathematics may be offered as a H.S.C course to exceptionally talented 3 unit students.
Students will be encourage to seek the guidance of the Mathematics Department in selecting the course of study best suited to their needs and abilities.
