COMPARING 2 SITUATION COMEDIES

by Brendon, Year 10

The highly acclaimed and very popular 'Seinfeld' series consists of many different characters with the main character of stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who plays a comical version of his own life. The humour in the Seinfeld series is a mixture of one-liners, visual comedy, conflicting personalities and unexpected replies.

In the sit-com 'Mad About You' the main characters are happily married couple Paul Buchman, a documentary making trickster with a childish attitude in a mature person's body and Jamie Buchman a business woman with a generous though immature attitude.

The humour created is a mixture of visual comedy, one-line jokes and unexpected changes. In the 'Thanksgiving' episode there is an ongoing gag of having to buy a bigger turkey everytime another person is invited to dinner.

These two sit coms are very successful, and have many similarities. They are both filmed in one common setting i.e. an apartment, both are set in New York. The main characters are children in adult bodies

We cannot overlook the obvious differences that make these shows individual. 'Seinfeld' has four main characters and is more oriented toward one-line gags. In fact it starts and ends with Mr Seinfeld doing his stand-up comedy. In 'Seinfeld', the characters are all single, bouncing from relationship to relationship. They are more carefree and do not care too much about other people and their feelings. In "Mad About You' the two main characters are happily married. They're more mature and caring to other people. It incorporates more visual comedy, even ending on a visual gag.

With all these differences it makes you think that there is not just one correct situational comedy format, and no one correct basis for making a great sitcom. It is all the original aspects incorporated with the expected ideas that make a great sitcom. These two ones are in this superior class.

MOVIE REVIEWS by YEAR 9

These movie reviews were originally desk-top-published using Pagemaker 5.0 and were the students' first attempt to write in the genre of the film review.

BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD: DO AMERICA

The movie Beavis and Buthead do America is a hilarious movie featuring the always funny cartoon characters Buthead and Beavis. The story starts with their most most prize possession stolen, their TV. On their search for replacement they get expelled and by accident are mistaken for hitmen, and so their trip begins. They take a bus trip and visit many other American tourist attractions.

The soundtrack is great, featuring such bands as 'the Red Hot Chill Peppers' and others. All the characters are hilarious. led by Beavis and Buthead, their hippy teacher, stressed out principal and an unfortunate tourist couple that are always in the same destinations as Beavis and Buthead.

It's a great movie which any Beavis and Buthead fan would love and anyone else must see. A big two thumbs up.

"If you're going to bury the truth, make sure it stays buried!

From the writer of 'Scream': Kevin Williamson

This movie hit the screens in 197, and had viewers watching it from the edge of their seats. The movie was a great success. This film is one of the best horror movies made recently.

The four teenagers were innocently driving along road when they hit a body. They decide that they couldn't tell anyone, including the police. So the body (that they presumed was dead) had to be hidden and buried.I think this is a really great movie. I personally love horror movies, but hate blood and guts, but this movie makes you jump a lot more than anything and I got to enjoy it. So if you are like me or love a really well made scary movie, then I think you should see this film
