ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

Some factors to consider when contemplating participating in a competition or a project

WHY?

  • What will the specific KLA outcomes that can be achieved for the group of students by their participation?
  • Will the project fit the curriculum, or will the curriculum fit the project?
  • Does the project lend itself to across curriculum learning outcomes and perspectives such as Aboriginal Education?
  • What extra learning dimensions can be achieved by student/class/school participation in this project, eg. new student and teacher skills, global perspective
  • What resources does the school already have for this project, what resources will need to be accessed, eg. financial, personnel, physical
  • What local community resources are accessible/can be accessed for the project?
  • How does the project fit in with the whole school plan? Curriculum?
  • How appropriate are the project activities to student learning stages?
  • Does project have a rigid timeline that will force class activities, or is it flexible. What scope for future development after 'the action' is over?
  • Who are the stakeholders in this project, how can their needs be met? eg. students, other staff, local community, council, corporations

HOW?

  • Brainstorm an interesting project title, an acronym or metaphor perhaps
  • Outline aims and outcomes - about half a dozen, from a 'big picture' point of view
  • More detailed outcomes from student/school perspective
  • Outline how the community will benefit
  • List all possible resources and avenues of support - in and out of school
  • Research approximate budget - materials, excursions, personnel time
  • Organisation of student teaching/learning activities - keep in mind impact of school organisation
