We met with representatives from Oz GREEN, the enviromental group that is working with the Enviromental Protection Authority to help improve the creeks in the Northen Beaches, including Brookvale and Greendale Creeks. Oz Green helped us look at our stormwater drain risks.  The Northern Beaches Stormwater Action Project is an initiative of Oz GREEN and Warringah Council. The project is assisted by NSW Government through its Stormwater Trust. The Stormwater Action Project aims to improve stormwater pollution management practices of companies that are situated within the catchments of Manly and Curl Curl Lagoons. |

Report 1 We looked at the stormwater drains to see if they were blocked with rubbish or leaves. We went to the Craft room to look at the sink. Then we went to the girls' toilet to see whether the water goes in to the drain or the playground. We went to the carpark and found that the drain was blocked by all the leaves from the trees. We walked around the Adult Education Centre, Main School Building and carpark. One way to stop the leaves and rubbish going into the storm water drains is to replace grates with a special lid that only has small holes. Then the leaves and rubbish cannot wash into the stormwatwer drains. We can sweep away the rubbish and mulch the leaves for the gardens. |

Report 2 We checked around the school to see what was needed to be done about the school stormwater. We looked at drains and stormwater pipes because they were covered in leaves and rubbish and rocks plus sand. We went to Joe's shed to see if any chemicals could spill into stormwater drain. We saw that when the toilets are cleaned the water does not run down the stormwater. We walked around the main building and we went across the parking lot. There was a drain that was filled with leaves. We have to find a way to stop the drains getting blocked. We looked at our school compost. Then we went to the staffroom to discuss about what we should do to help the school to improve its stormwater that runs into the creeks nearby. |
