Alma Park Zoo was established in 1969 as a native animal sanctuary. All it was, was a few small concrete and wire cages with some Australian animals in it. They were treating the animals very badly. The animals were soon dying, and the R.S.P.C.A. was soon called in. The zoo was nearly shut down.
The zoo then changed. The animals were treated better, and the R.S.P.C.A. soon dropped the charges.
Around 1973, it became a registered zoo with the arrival of exotic animals. The zoo was taken over by the present owners in late 1981. Now the zoo has a lot of exotic animals, inside huge cages, made to look and feel like the animals natural habitat. The zoo now has 11 full-time staff, 9 of them working on the grounds, and they do a great job of it. The lush grounds have a jungle feeling to it. The zoo's policy is to continue to rehouse and improve conditions for the animals.
