From the Deputies
Mr.
Johnson
Welcome to Dapto High School. It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to communicate with such a vast range of people as afforded by this wonderful technology known as the "internet"! It is a tool of the times that we in schools must grasp and use effectively, and I'd like to pay tribute to Mr. John Wilson from our Industrial Arts faculty for his work in setting up Dapto High School's web site.
Let me introduce myself. I am Peter Johnson and I have been at Dapto High School since 1992. Mr. Moore and I will be working together to develop a more seamless team approach to the administration, and development of Dapto High School at our level.
In terms of our oversight of the school, we work with the Principal to share the school's management. We have developed a shared approach to supporting students from year 7 to year 12.
We are keen to promote Dapto High School as a strong comprehensive high school with a talented and very experienced staff, and we are aware of the expectations that our school community rightly holds for the education of their children. All schools and teachers are currently under huge forces of change and I will do my best to keep you informed of the changes and developments that we undertake through future updates on this site.
Finally let me assure you that we do take very seriously at Dapto High School, every student's right to a quality education.
I would be happy to discuss any issues with you if you care to make contact.
Mr. Peter Johnson
Mr. Moore
The students and staff of Dapto High have impressed greatly me since I started work at the school in term 4, 2006. It is a friendly place and has a great sense of tradition and community. I certainly understand why many of the staff are giving such long-term service to the school community – it’s a great place to work and learn. I have been particularly impressed with the esprit de corps evident in the volunteers, many of them ex-students of the school, who involve themselves actively with the P&C, canteen and a range of other essential services.
I am the managing deputy for Years 7, 9 and 11 in 2007. It is important that academic, welfare and other concerns are dealt with positively and I encourage students, parents and teachers to discuss issues with me whenever possible. Please feel free to make an appointment to discuss what can be done to help your child.
My background as an English teacher makes me particularly interested in improving literacy outcomes for our students. In the 21st century, citizens need to be multiliterate to contribute and live effectively in our complex society. To be ‘multiliterate’ means students are literate in new online technologies as well traditional texts. It is also important they are able to create a range of texts using these new technologies. For example, students will have the opportunity to establish blogs (short for weblogs http://www.det.wa.edu.au/education/cmis/eval/curriculum/ict/weblogs/) this year for reflection about their learning and life at school. However, reading is still the key – kids who read succeed!
Opportunity, learning and goals are three key words I will repeatedly use when speaking with students. I will ask what opportunities are you taking at school; how are you focused on learning; and, what are your goals? I hope that students will grow in their ability to answer these questions and that you know what your children will say in response.
Studies show that when parents and carers are actively involved in the life of the school educational outcomes for their children are vastly improved. I look forward to meeting you at school functions and discussing how we can help your sons and daughters achieve their potential. I especially invite Year 7 parents to see me early in the year – even if it is only for a chat rather than a specific concern.
Have a great year!
Darcy Moore
