Five unit plans are presented here as good
examples of computer use, outcomes based education and
constructivist learning. I have chosen to focus on one of
these issues for each unit plan. To print each unit plan,
make sure your printer is set to LANDSCAPE orientation.
Ingrid was a Year 6 teacher at Ipswich
East State School. Her unit plan shows how a teacher's
personal beliefs influence the sequence of activities in a
classroom. Her unit is also a great example of
constructivism and use of the internet to get up to date
information.
Jan was a Year 2 teacher at Kruger
SS. Her unit plan is an excellent and easy to understand
example of constructivism and how it can be achieved in the
lower grades.
Damien teaches Year 3 at Ipswich East State School.
His unit plan is an excellent example of how computers can be
used to enhance and extend the classroom curriculum. His
class used the internet to take on-line quizzes and used email
to get first hand knowledge of the landforms of another country.
Corrie taught
Year 7 at Collingwood Park State School. Corrie started
planning his unit by defining the desired student learning
outcomes. He then devised a sequence of activities that
would lead the class to reach that outcome.
Kathleen was a Year 5 teacher at Redbank
Plains State School. Her unit plan focuses on students
understanding information in order to solve a
problem. This type of teaching will become
increasingly important in the future as a form of combating the
'cut and paste' trends emerging, as students realise they can
quickly produce traditional 'information reports' by taking
information from the internet and CD ROMs, while having little
or no understanding of the content.
