Gold Rushes: What was the most effective way to mine gold?

Unit Outcome[s]:

Through investigating  mining techniques and their implications  students understandings  of     effective mining techniques will be enhanced.  Students will communicate  their scientific understanding by  presenting an information report with diagrams.

Students will use a role play situation - eg: Bob and Jane are coming to the goldfields to make money.  Jane is pregnant and needs Bob to help her out.  What is the best way for Bob to find gold in this situation?
