Vietnam War

Australian soldier in Vietnam.

The Vietnam war was a bad war between North Vietnamese (the Vietcong) and the South Vietnamese. The Vietcong wanted to take over all of Vietnam. But the South Vietnamese didn't like their religion or their way of governing.

Immediate effect:

After the war Vietnam was formed into a Multi-Cultural Country with no North or South Vietnam.

Social Impact:

In Australia, there was a lot of argument about whether or not we should get involved in Vietnam's problems. We had an alliance with the USA who wanted us to get involved.

Some people refused to go to war in Vietnam and they were sent to prison but eventually public opinion forced the Government to pull out of the war.

During and after the war, Vietnam's currency hovered, dropped and climbed marginally because of the war.

What Australian's learned as a result:

Australia learned that everyone has their own rights and nobody can be forced to fight when they do not believe in that war. They have the right to choose.
