King Alfred
 | Alfred ruled Wessex. He was born in Wantage in southern England. He conquered London in 886, and soon was known as the king of all England. He was the wisest king in all the land. Alfred began a court school and invited foreign scholars. |
Alfred won his first battle when he was 21.
The Danes were after Alfred.
Alfred disguised as a peasant or harp player when the Danes were around. The English defeated the Danes totally. Later London became part of Alfred's kingdom.
In 893 the Danes attacked again with 80 ships up the River Thames.
