William The Conqueror

This picture is from Encarta.

William the Conqueror lived in England in the Middle Ages. He was born in 1027 and died in 1087.

He was remembered because he was offered the crown and after 5 years he made himself master of all England.

When William The Conqueror died his eldest son became Duke of Normandy and his next son, King of England. William also fought in the Battle of Hastings.

Here is his castle.

Originally we published the date of 1066 as the birth date but then we had the following email exchange with Julie from Virginia, USA.

Dear sirs, William the Conqueror was not born in 1066. That was when the Battle of Hastings took place, perhaps in Oct. 1066. I just thought I would bring this error to your attention.

Dear Julie,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I am copying this email to the class teacher from last year's 4/5S who might be able to help us get the correct information so that we can edit that page.

Thanks,

Dear Judith, I found the correct date or at least year of William the Conqueror's Birth. According to two Encyclopedia sources it's 1027. It's very interesting for me to see what other children and schools of other nations and of my own children's ages have been doing. Thanks for responding to my message.
Best Wishes, Julie

Thanks Julie,

I have put it on my "do sheet" to update that William the conqueror page.

Would you mind if I acknowledge your contribution as I do this? It is a powerful use of internet to have adults around the world helping our children to keep learning.

Best wishes,

Judith Bennett
