Chameleon

Chameleons are very rare, and they change colours in different coloured places.

They have spikes under their chin and on top of their head and running down their spine.

It is by using a cin'e camera that it has been found that in one sixteenth of a second, that is how fast a chameleon can flick its tongue out and in.

Chameleons enemies are pollution, other animals, diseases, people and wrong food.

It eats small birds, lizards, mammals and insects.

Chameleon Report - from South Africa

Here is some wonderful information, sent to us from our friends in Grade 5 at Micklefield School in South Africa.

In the brackets are the names of the students who wrote each part of the report. We want to thank them for sending us this information.

Some chameleons lay their eggs in the ground and others like the Dwarf chameleon produce live young. (Miengah, Shahlaa and Sameenah)

Mating takes place in January or February. There may be 3 to 4 matings a day. The egg laying takes place in March. A chameleon may be seen after rain looking for a suitable place for a hole to put the eggs. The hole which the eggs go in is a little bit bigger than the body of the chameleon. A chameleon may die while digging the hole or laying her eggs because she is so tired. (Taryn, Deirdre and Shannon)

You find chameleon eggs underground in the soil. A baby chameleon takes 10 months to hatch. There are 113 different kinds of chameleons in the world. In South Africa we have 2 kinds of egg laying chameleons and 14 types of Dwarf chameleons. The common chameleon lays up to 60 eggs. (Francesca and Lindsay)

Dwarf Chameleons:- As soon as the egg has been laid it hatches and a baby with a body of 12 mm and a tail of 18 mm is born. After 2 to 5 minutes the mother lays the rest of her family.

Natural Enemies of chameleons:- Many snakes will eat chameleons especially the Boomslang (Tree snake). Millions of chameleons burn to death in veld fires.
(Robyn, Marlise and Lisa)

Chameleons and civilization do not mix. They are extremely rare.
