The population in 1987 was 8,562,000 then in 1987 was 7,620,225 and in 1996 it was 9,929, 000.

The main language that is spoken is French and there are native languages.

The main religions are Islam(65%), Christian (5%) and traditional African religions(30%). 

The currency is the CFA franc.

Products are cotton, oilseeds, fish and groundnuts.
