 Human Enviroment

Traditionally, Eskimos were the only people who lived year round in the Arctic regions of our Planet. Eskimos were the only human beings who were able to endure the incredible hardships of the Arctic all year long.

Igloos

A circle of fifteen snow blocks provides the foundations, and each higher layer is made smaller and smaller, until the builder must stand inside to seal the top.

For many of the Eskimos of Greenland and North America, hunting is their only means of livelihood.

A sheet of clear, fresh-water ice often serves as a window.

When violent storms call for an even stronger form of protection, a fire is lit inside the igloo and the entrance blocked with snow.

When the sea is free from ice in summer, a hunter goes after seals in his frail canoe called a kayak. The hunter paddles out to sea until he reaches a place where he believes a seal may rise to breathe.

Towns

There are now many modern houses in the Arctic. There are many towns with hospitals and schools.
