ELANORA HEIGHTS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Athletics Carnival

July 29th, 1998

The children report to school early and travel by bus to the Narrabeen Sport Centre on the shores of Narrabeen Lake. We have our Athletics Carnival in mid Winter so that it is not too hot for running.

The children are wearing their sports uniforms. They had to bring warm clothes as well because it was a VERY windy day.

The March Past

The March Past
The March Past - each house marched behind their flag.
The Yellow flag is for Currawongs.
When Currawong house marched past the camera
they were not all in step but most of them have their
left foot on the ground.

We have four houses at our school. Each child is in the same house as their brothers and sisters.
The March Past is an event and points are won if the house marches in step and in line and comes to a proper halt at the end.

The main events

Children competed in 100m, 200m and 800m races and each house selected teams to compete in the relays.

Children won points for their houses if they came first, second or third in a race or in the finals. Children who came first or second in the finals of any event represented our school in the District Carnival in August.

The 800m race

This race is run only four times - junior boys all together, junior girls, senior boys then senior girls.
40 or 50 children start at once and no one can move to the centre lane for the first 100m.
The children run twice around the oval and there is a big difference between the first and the last runner by the time they finish.

The relays

The house captains (children) study the results of all races and choose good runners from their house to run in the relays.

We had four relays - junior boys, junior girls, senior boys and senior girls.
