The 2000 Olympics!!

What we already knew about the 2000 Olympics:

It's going to be in Australia.

Telstra is a major sponsor of the Olympics.

We watched the Atlanta Olympic Games on television.

Description of the Olympics:

In the Olympics people compete for their country. If they come in the top three they receive a medal. First place gets gold, second silver and third gets bronze.

Some of the sports are boxing, basketball, javelin and hammer throw.

Olympians from every country will be there.

Immediate effect of the 2000 Olympics so far:

Telstra is building up to 30,000 telephone and fax lines to the Olympic Villages, media centres and competition venues plus capacity for 15,000 mobile communications services. Telephony services will utilise ISDN CENTREX and Intelligent Network (IN), the ultimate advanced services.

Social Impact of the 2000 Olympics so far:

Another winner will be Australian sport which, in an age of reliance on telecommunications, will have access to world class services.

Finally, Telstra's Network - and indeed the Games themselves - will showcase Australian technology and know-how to the world.

What Australians are gaining as a result of the 2000 Olympics:

Much of the infrastructure that will serve the Games is already in use. For example, optic fibre submarine cable connections to Asia, North America and Europe; more than 1.2 million kilometres of optic fibre cable, digital switching and transmission facilities; a digital mobile network that currently covers more than 90% of Australia's population.
