FIRST EXPLORERS
IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS
Lack of farming land and grazing country had hindered the growth of the infant colony of New South Wales. Sydney Town was walled in - Mountains to the North, West and South, the Pacific Ocean to the east.
The threats of crop failure and drought, coupled with an increasing population made finding a way over the mountains essential. An exploration party were sent on the 11th of May 1813. There were three partners - Wentworth, Blaxland and Lawson, a bushman, three convicts, four horses and five dogs. They travelled between 3-8km a day.
Wentworth, Blaxland and Lawson crossed the Blue Mountains because the new colony needed grassland and good farming soil.
