TOURISM

BUS

On weekends beginning at 9:30 am, The Blue Mountains Explorer Bus meets every morning train from Sydney at the Katoomba railway Station.

The double decker bus makes 17 stops on it's 50-minute circuit, including many of the major attractions of the Blue Mountains. Passengers are free to leave the tour at any time of the journey. Tickets cost $14 for adults, $7 for school children and $35 for families up to 3 children.

SCENIC RAILWAY

When the supply of shale was exhausted, the railway was abandoned until the 1930's, when the Katoomba Colliery began using the shale carts to give tourists the ride of their life on the steep incline. Today the carriages are far more comfortable, but the ride down to the foot of the cliffs is no less exciting.

SCENIC SKYWAY

The Scenic Skyway is a cable car that carries passengers for a short ride across the gorge, with a 300 meter drop below. Tickets for each ride cost $3.40 for adults and $1.80 for children under 14 years of age.

ECHO POINT

One of the highlights of the cliff drive is ECHO POINT , which over looks the soaring sandstone pillars known as THE THREE SISTERS . The name comes from an Aboriginal legend, which relates how THE THREE SISTERS were turned to stone by their witchdoctor father to save them from the clutches of a mythical monster. The whole area was once a seabed that lifted over along period and subsequently eroded, leaving behind formations of sedimentary rock like THE THREE SISTERS. From ECHO POINT you can clearly see the horizontal sandstone bedding in the rock. If you have powerful lungs you can find out why it's called ECHO POINT. The formation is floodlit at night.

ATTRACTIONS

A great attraction to go see is Megalong Valley Farm situated in a deep mountain valley, this working sheep and cattle property is also a demonstration farm, with displays of farm animals and pioneer farm skills. Events begin at 10:30 and include a cattle show a Clydesdale horse show, tractor rides, horse jumping and a sheep shearing display. $8.50 for adults and $5 for children 3 to 16 years of age.

BUSH WALKS

There are walks lasting a few minutes to several days. The two most popular areas, spectacular from the top of the cliffs or the bottom of the valley, are The Jamision Valley immediately south of Katoomba and the Grose valley area north-east of Katoomba and Blackhealth. The area south of Glenbrook is another good place. There is a fairly easy three-day walk from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves along the six-foot track.
