Parents visiting in the classrooms

The parents spent the first hour in the classrooms looking at the work their children have done this year.

It was a time of warm sharing between parents and children.

After a short break, the organised activities began. These were designed as a celebration to the cultural heritage we enjoy in Australia. The activities feature aspects of the some of the cultures represented within the population of Australia and especially of some of our teachers.

 International Games

In Education Week there were many activities. One of the activities involved playground games from around the world.

French Marble Game

Elastics game from Norway

The games are played in Australia but they are called different names. In Australia the games are called Elastics, Marbles, Igloo, Hopscotch and Roll The Hoop.

We have seen a picture of children playing a similar elastics game in the Ukraine.

Eskimo igloo game

The peoples that they came from were Norwegian, French, Eskimo, English and Aboriginal.

MAORI STICK GAMES

For education week all the year six students were to help teachers with an activity that the rest of the school would visit for 12 minutes. Tyler and Tom helped with the Maori stick games. Maori sticks is a game you play with a partner by tapping sticks together while making different patterns.

Maoris come from Polynesia. We explained this fact and many others to the children.

We had great fun and learnt a lot. We're sure other children enjoyed their day as well.

Italian Drama...........

In Italian drama Ben, Haydn, Daniel and Jade performed The Three Little Pigs (I tre porcellini) in Italian.

One of the parents at our school, Mrs May, read the story in Italian and we acted it out.

Mrs May used the colours of the Italian flag for the word cards. She taught us the Italian words for parts of the story so we could recognise them when she was reading.

We had to snort when she said "porcellini" and howl like a wolf when she said "lupo".

Turkish Dancing

One activity was Turkish dancing. Mrs Parker called us 'The Turkish Delights'. Mrs Parker who has a Turkish backround taught the girls a cultural dance.

Mrs Parker greeted the children and parents by saying 'Merhaba' meaning hello.

Turkish Dancing

cologne in her hands.

Mrs Parker talked about the coffee in Turkey and how it was a favourite.

Mrs Parker had some Turkish cologne to share with the audience. In Turkey, people greet friends and family by pouring cologne in the palm of the visitors' hands. The visitors can splash it on their faces to freshen up after their journey.

After the dance that the girls performed, the parents got to sample some turkish delight. (It is sweet jelly.)

The girls' costumes were a lovely display. Monique's costume was a traditional Turkish costume which her Turkish father brought back.

Library research about other countries

Countries we can learn about.

Mrs Morrison explained that we could learn about any country we wanted to. There were plenty of books and also resources on the computers that could help us learn.

These girls are deciding that they will learn about New Zealand.

In the library some children used Encarta 95 to look at information about other countries.
These children are looking at the Turkish flag and reading information about Turkey.

Oktoberfest

Michael played the accordian.

Alana, Corie, Elise, Lee and Chris helped with the Germany activity. Miss Danko was dressed in German clothes.

The activity was based on the OKTOBER FEST where you had to scull orange juice. ( In Germany they scull beer instead.)

We chose four people to have a go and the winner got a Mars Bar.

We also showed them a dance which is done in Germany, which is very energetic.
The Year 6's who helped had a fun time doing that dance.
We also had a special guest, Michael, who told us about Germany and played the piano accordian to add to the fun.

England sent convicts to Australia to settle

We had soldiers and convicts.
One of the classrooms was set up like old England. The criminals were running around wild in the streets and things were being stolen.

The soldiers were trying to capture the criminals but it wasn't working. Finally the soldiers captured one of the criminals trying to sneak away with a loaf of bread.

Mr MacFarlane was the judge.

She was taken to the high judge and was put in jail before being sent to the docks to go to Botany Bay in Australia.

We watched a video of part of "Oliver Twist". It was all about being a pickpocket. Some convicts sent to Australia in the early days had been caught stealing things out of people's pockets.

French word games

The games were played
totally in French.

Madame Crendal teaches French at our school.

She organised games in which we had to call out numbers in French.

Four of hese children helped
Madame Crendal with
the French games.
James (in the white shirt) played the French National Anthem.

Aboriginal Art

Mr and Mrs Raymond,
parents at this school,
kindly agreed to come in
and run this activity for us.

Aboriginal Art uses dots and lines and it can take years to learn to do.

The main colors they used in the past were red, black, yellow and orange. They made the colours from crushed rocks and other natural dyes. Modern Aboriginal artists use many different colours.

It is fun. Some Aboriginal art is put in galleries. A lot of aborigines are famous for their art, such as Albert Namatjira.

Mr Raymond played the didgeridoo and we decorated paper boomerangs with Aboriginal designs. Mr Raymond told us about the two main types of boomerangs. The almost straight ones are for hunting and do not come back when you throw them. The rounded V shaped ones come back to you if you throw them the right way.

Mr Raymond is playing the
didgeridoo while we draw.

National Anthems of the World

During Education Week some year 6 members of Elanora Heights Concert Band were invited to play the National Anthems of the World.

These national Anthems included the German National Anthem played by Francesca on her flute, the French National Anthem played by James on his trumpet, the Japanese National Anthem played by Emma on her flute, the Israeli National Anthem played by Luke on his saxaphone, the New Zealand National Anthem played by Anthony on his trumpet and the American National Anthem played by Annabel on her flute.

Computer Room

It was Eduction week at our school and all the kids were excited. I was in the computer room helping and most of the kids parents were here.

I had to show the parents what the kids had done through the year and the parents loved looking at all our work.

Kimberley from KE is showing
her webpage to her parents and
grandparents (who were visiting from South Africa).

Every child in the school had some work on Internet to show to their parents.

If you want to see this you can look at our class by class index.

Brother and sister
(students of our school)
in Indonesian clothes.

At Elanora Primary school the students had an education week which included Performing Arts night and Education day.

For Performing Arts night the students performed in different groups and some of these were: the guitar group, turkish dancers, the band, the dance group and the junior and senior choir. The performing Arts Night was a great success.

For Education Week Open Day, Year six helped out at eleven different activities.

I personally liked Education Day because my Dad came to my classroom to see my work.
