Castles.

The first castles were made of wood but enemies burnt them down so they built them with other materials like sandstone, brick, limestone and rock. Some castles had walled barriers around them like ancient Rome and some castles had moats.

It was built this way to keep enemies out, to guard important places and protect their family. Most castles had prisons for people who disobeyed the law.

The people who lived in castles were Kings and Queens who lived there all the time, princes and princesses, land holders and barons, maids who served the Prince, Princess, King and Queen, chefs to cook food for the family and Guards who looked after the whole castle.

The type of community who used a castle in medieval times was wealthy people who used them as fortresses.
