 Leech

This picture is from Encarta.

The leech, also known as a blood sucker, always lives up to its name. The leech lives all over the world. Its habitats are usually in lakes, creeks, dams and puddles.

It doesn't have many enemies but here are a few. Humans are one of the main enemies because we might step on them or kill them with salt if they have attached themselves to our ankles. Birds are enemies because they might eat them.

One of their roles in life is that they were used to get venom from snake-bites out of humans. The leech's colour is black. It's about one inch long, has smooth skin and it looks like a small bit of rubber. So next time you go bushwalking near water - take care! Something might be snacking on your toes!
