The Sacred Kingfisher is one of the most familiar of the smaller Australian Kingfishers.

The Kingfisher lives in pairs.

It breeds from September to March. Their nest is a chamber at the end of a tunnel usually drilled into a aboreal termite nest but sometimes in an earth bank or even in a fence post.

The Kingfishers body is short and plump, and their legs and feet are small. Most Kingfishers have short tails except for the beautiful Paradise Kingfisher of Australia and New Guinea.
