Knowledge (5 points)

Year 3 students must complete at least 1 of these questions.

  • Name Australia’s three types of Government and describe the responsibilities of each.
  • Name the following: Prime Minister of Australia, Premier of New South Wales, your local council, the mayor of your council and where your local council chambers are located.
  • Find pictures of Parliament House in Canberra, Parliament House in Sydney and your local council chambers. Write a short description to go with each picture.
  • Find your council on a local map (Pittwater, Warringah or Manly) and trace its boundaries.
  • Write a definition for a ‘community’ your own words.
  • List 10 books (and their authors) about Government (Federal, State or Local).
  • Name a community group and describe whom it is for and what it does to contribute to the community. ("Gumnuts" in the Guide Hall)

  • Prepare a flow chart to explain how Australia’s three kinds of Government began.
  • Explain the difference between ‘Goods’ and ‘Services’. Include 5 examples of each.
  • Outline two jobs that the council does and describe how these affect your life.
  • Write a story, poem or play based on ‘Life without a local council’.
  • Create 5 or more council mathematics problems (For your stage).
  • Using the Manly Daily, cut out the Pittwater, Warringah or Manly Council News article and summarise one of the issues discussed.
  • Describe a paid and unpaid service in the community and explain how each contributes to community life, eg meals on wheels, librarian, school working bees.

Application (15 points)

Year 3 students must complete at least 1 of these questions.

Year 4 students must complete at least 1 of these questions.

  • Make a jigsaw puzzle with a Local Government theme.
  • Design a Local Council game with bonus points and pitfalls eg, your dog was caught after escaping from your backyard and was not registered – GO BACK 3 SPACES. You showed a Pittwater sticker on your car before parking at Mona Vale beach – MOVE ON 2 SPACES.
  • Take a collection of photographs to illustrate the role of Local Governments.
  • Make a diorama or a paper mache map of our local area including the beaches, shops and houses etc.
  • Make a collage of newspaper clippings relating to our local community. Have a theme like; children, elderly, heros, tragedy, etc.

Analysis (20 points)

Year 4 students must complete at least 1 of these questions.


Services provided by Government
  • You are thinking of creating more ‘dog exercising areas’ in Pittwater. Design a questionnaire to gather information about the number of dogs in the local area and whether or not their owners would use the facility, to help you decide if it is worthwhile.
  • Investigate then write a report about the major changes that have occurred in the Pittwater area over the last fifty years?
  • How is our Student Representative Council similar to Pittwater or Warringah Council?
  • Compare the two graphs given and explain how they are similar and different and give reasons for the differences.

Synthesis (25 points)

  • Design a new dog-catching tool. Give full instructions on its use and warn of any dangers, etc.
  • In order to cut costs, the council is planning to close all the local Public Libraries. Write about your feelings towards this suggestion.
  • Predict what might happen if a train line was built that linked Palm Beach to Manly, to Central Station in the city and up to Hornsby.
  • Create a pamphlet or brochure that informs mothers with babies, young people and/or the elderly about some of the services provided for them, by the local council.
  • Draw a plan of your ideal community. Make sure you include labels.

Evaluation (30 points)


We used maps, charts, photos
and drawings to show what we had learned.
  • Is there a better solution to having a small group of people in a council, representing a whole community?
  • Use the PLUS / MINUS / INTERESTING headings to organise information about local councils building skateboard ramps/parks for young people.
  • Do you think that having 40km speed limits around schools is a good or bad thing? Justify your answer.
  • Identify some of the characteristics of a good council member and explain what the person you elected would be like.
  • Make a booklet about 5 rules you see as important to living in a community. List some reasons why to convince others.
  • Prepare 3 arguments for both sides of the debate;
  • "THAT CATS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE PITTWATER AND WARRINGAH AREA AS THEY ARE KILLING THE NATIVE ANIMALS."
    • Recommend at least 4 reasons why all school students should learn about Local Government.
