EDMUND BARTON

Edmund Barton was the first Australian Prime Minister from 1901-1903.

He was born in 1849 and was educated at Sydney Grammar School and Sydney University, where he became a barrister by graduating 1871, he was elected for the N.S.W. Parliament in 1879. In 1877 he married Jean Mason Ross. They had 6 children.

Edmund Barton was Attorney-General of N.S.W. from 1891-1893. was . He introduced customs tariffs to protect Australian industries. Edmund also introduced "The White Australian Policy." He made many laws to keep Australians prevent coloured people from entering Australia . This stopped slavery. Before this ships were going up to the Pacific Islands and kidnapping them and making them work in the sugar cane farms.

Edmund Died on 7th of January 1920 at Medlow Bath West of Sydney. He was 70 years old.
