Rivers In the Snowy Mountains

Mt Kosciusko is 2228m high - it's the highest peak in Australia. It draws many tourists especially in the winter months for the down hill skiing, and bushwalks in the summer months.

In the summer the snow melts and brings water down into the rivers of the Snowy Mountains.

Snowy River

This link is a protest by the local people that want to save the Snowy River. This river was diverted during the building of the Snowy Mountains Scheme with most of the water going into the scheme to create electricity and irrigate on the Western side of the Mountains.

 Murrumbidgee River

This is a link to lots of information about the Murrumbidgee River which flows west from the Snowy Mountains.

Murray River

This page contains pictures of the Murray river and information.

This river begins in the Snowy Mountains where there are dams on the river for hydro electricity and to control the flow of the river for irrigation. At the end of its journey the river supplies water for Adelaide.
