 Chatham Islands

About 760 people live in the Chatham Islands east of the South Island of New Zealand. They live on two main islands - Pitt and Chatham - which were formed by volcanoes. There are a number of smaller islands near by. The Chatham Islands are part of New Zealand.

Waitangi on Chatham Island is the main settlement.

Wool and frozen fish are the main exports.

The Moriori people lived on these Islands for centuries before the European whalers and Maoris came. The Maoris killed many of the Morioris. The last full-blooded Moriori died in 1933.
