The flag of Kiribati

Kiribati used to be called the Gilbert Islands. Britain ruled much of what is now Kiribaiti from 1892 to 1979, when Kiribaiti became an independent nation.

Kiribati has 33 coral islands and atolls, and the total land area is 886sq km (342 sq mi). Kiribati includes Banaba (Ocean island), the Gilbert Islands, Kiritimati atoll (Christmas Island) and the Line Islands. Kiribati has a population of about 81,000.

Tarawa, is Kiribaiti's Capital.
