 Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands are made up of 16 different coral and volcanic islands. Their 3 main islands are: Saipan which is 122 sq. km, Tinian which is 101sq km and Rota which is 83 sq. km.

Their economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. Their major exports include vegetables, beef and pork.

Siapan contains the seat of Government, a busy seaport and an international airport.

The islands were first sighted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 carrying the Spanish flag. After World War 1 the German, or Northern, Marianas were placed under Japanese control. During World War 2 the Marianas came under American control and in 1975 the people voted to become a U.S. Commonwealth. In 1978 the Northern Marianas became internally self-governing and in 1986 they became a U.S. Commonwealth with the citizens becoming American citizens.

Their population which was last counted in 1990 was 43,345.
