 New Caledonia.

New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France. It lies in the south western Pacific Ocean. It is about 1100 nautical miles north east of Sydney Australia.

The total area is about 19,058sq km. The population is around 165,000.

43% of the population is Melanesians,(Kanaks). 37% is European, mainly French. The remaining inhabitants are Vietnamese, Polynesians and Indonesians.

Nouméa is the largest city and the only city. Most of the inhabitants are Christians.

The economy of New Caledonia is a variety of activities, agriculture, copra, coffee and food crops, stock raising, fishing, forestry and tourism and most important mining.

They mine Nickel, Iron and Manganese Ores.

New Caledonia was sighted in 1774 by James Cook who gave it the Roman name for Scotland.
