These Norfolk Island Pines are
famous around the world now. In the days of sailing ships, they were valued for repairing masts and wooden parts of ships.

There was flax on Norfolk Island
that the sailors planned to use for repairing sails.

Norfolk Island in an external territory of Australia. The Area of Norfolk Island is 36 square kilometres. The population is 1,977. Norfolk Island's capital is Kingston.

Norfolk Island is 1,600 kilometres northeast of Sydney, Australia. Most of Norfolk Island's population are descendents of crew members of The British Naval ship ''Bounty.'' In 1789, the sailors of The ''Bounty'' mutinied against the way they were treated by their captain, William Bligh. They settled on Pitcairn Island in 1790. In 1856, 194 of their descendents moved to Norfolk Island. Norfolk Island has a population of 1,800. Tourism is the main source of income. Norfolk Island has fertile soil. The Islanders grow bananas, citrus fruits and vegetables. In 1774 The British Explorer James Cook became the first European to reach Norfolk Island.

Captain Cook named Norfolk Island after the wife of the noblest peers of England describing Paradise. His superiors made it the site for a settlement where convicts worked as slaves and it soon turned into Hell.

Nearly half of Norfolk's population is of The Pitcairn Stock. The remainder of the population is of Australians and New Zealanders in equal numbers.

All over Norfolk Island are serenely beautiful landscapes and wild seascapes. About a third of The Island is devoted to Reserves and National Parks. Some of the birds and animals are distinct to this area and are endangered e.g. the Norfolk Island Boobook Owl, Norfolk Island Parrot and Norfolk Island Silvereye.
