Pitcairn Island was founded in 1767 by a British Naval Officer and a group of men who had mutinied from the ship called "The Bounty", which had been under the control of Captain Bligh.

The Island is between Australia and South America. Its area is about 5 sq. km and is 2 sq. m. It is the main island in a group of islands. Its population was measured in 1991 and was about 61.

The Island is of volcanic origin. It has cliffs which rise up to sea level. There is fertile soil but no streams on the Island. The plants grow in a subtropical climate. The people grow oranges, bananas and other subtropical crops.

When the British Naval Officers took over the Island, they took Tahitian women to the Island. They lived on top of a large cliff where they stayed. Eventually the population grew. They survived on the food that was on the Island. One day some whalers saw them and told the British. When the British got there, the Pitcairn Islanders were forgiven for what they had done.

There was an overcrowding problem on Pitcairn Island by the middle of the 19th Century and in 1856, 194 Pitcairn Islanders agreed to resettle on Norfolk Island which had been abandoned as a penal settlement.
