It contains more than 150 Islands and Islets forming 3 main groups - Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vavau.Some of the Islands were first sighted in 1616 by Dutch navigators - William Corneils Schouten and Jacob le Maire. |
These Islands lie generally in a long northern-southern chain. Some islands are covered with lush, juicy vegetation, others are volcanic and mountainous.Tongatapu and Ha'apai are low-lying islands of coral formation. Vava'u is volcanic and mountainous.
