Tonga is southeast of Fiji. Its area is 748 square kilometres. It contains more than 150 Islands and Islets forming 3 main groups - Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vavau.

Some of the Islands were first sighted in 1616 by Dutch navigators - William Corneils Schouten and Jacob le Maire.

These Islands lie generally in a long northern-southern chain. Some islands are covered with lush, juicy vegetation, others are volcanic and mountainous.

Tongatapu and Ha'apai are low-lying islands of coral formation. Vava'u is volcanic and mountainous. Some volcanoes are active.
