The sword-shaped, angular or slightly flattened stems of B.rubiginosa rise a metre or so from a scaly creeping, lying down stem and bear narrow, iregular groups of flowers very close together on red-brown spikelets.The clusters occur together on a long and short stalks.

The 1 or 2 leaves on the stems have long sheaths and short channelled blades.

It has a shiny reddish nut, about 3mm long.

HABITAT: Wet or swampy ground.

DISTRUBUTION: Wide spread on coast and tablelands throughout N.S.W.

FLOWERING: October - December.
