| Volunteers are about to embark on something fishy in Pittwater streets. Over the next year residents can expect to see three yellow fish stencils
appearing above stormwater drains in their neighbourhood.
The aim of the Yellow Fish Road program, launched Yesterday, is to remind
people that it is marine life that ultimately bears the impact of what is washed
into the drains.
Coastal Environment Centre co-ordinator Joanne Tulau said the fish graphic
concept was recommended by the Palm Beach Association after one of its
members saw a Yellow Fish Road program operating in Canada.
Three bright yellow fish stencils - based on Pittwater's popular silver bream -
will replace the faded wording that now appears above drains informing where
the drain empties into.
"People can become quite blind to signage," said Ms Tulau, "so this is a more
graphic approach."
Elanora Heights Public School students yesterday took to their own surrounds
with a stencilling kit. The fish-stencilled school drains will be used as a visual
prop to educate students on stormwater pollution.
