Sacred Kingfisher

DESCRIPTION:

The Sacred Kingfisher is a bird that has a really beautiful blue on its back and a creamy colour on its chest, with a yellow beak.  

CALL:

Its call sounds like a bip, bip, bip, bip.

HABITAT:

It lives in most kinds of open and tropical woodland, suburban parks and gardens and in amongst mangroves.

DISTRIBUTION:

It lives nearly all over Australia except for in the middle of Australia where the desert is.

REPRODUCTION:

The Sacred Kingfisher's breeding season occurs from September to March.

INTERESTING FACTS: 

The Sacred Kingfisher's nest is a chamber at the bottom of a tunnel often drilled into an old termite nest. It is commonly found in trees for protection from wild animals, like feral dogs and cats.

FOOD:

It eats mainly small reptiles and insects.
