The Glossop High School Annual Report for 2007 is now available.
Sports
Glossop High has a proud tradition of sporting participation and achievement at high levels. Former GHS students have even reached national levels in their chosen fields such as representing Australia in the Olympics and playing in the AFL. Other former students have played Inline Hockey in the United States of America, and played Gaelic Football in the United Kingdom. If you would like to know more, please look at the Sporting Graduares page.
We have also had consistently good results at state level athletics competitions. GHS consistently achieves excellent results in interschool competitions.
Academia
Glossop High is also proud of its students' academic achievements. Former students have gone on to pursue post-graduate studies in their chosen fields, including Physics, English and Chemistry. Additionally, Glossop's students consistently achieve better than average TER scores, enabling them to enter highly valued degrees such as veterinary science, speech pathology and computer science.
Students who are not academically minded are also catered for by our Vocational and Education Training program or VET, which teaches them skills that will enable them to pursue their chosen career paths with high levels of confidence and experience. This program has increased GHS's retention rate, and many students have been offered positions in the workplace because of relationships formed during the course.
Continental
Annually GHS holds the Continental, a fundraiser that involves the entire school community in an evening of entertainment.
Houses
Students are divided between four houses, fostering an environment of healthy competition. These houses compete to earn the most money at the Continental, and to gain the most points in sporting competitions. These houses are named after the fathers of Australian federation: Alfred Deakin, Henry Parkes, Sam Macintosh, and William Hughes.
Behaviour Management
Glossop High's Senior Campus boasts an unusual adult learning environment. While this has many benefits, it also poses challenges in terms of behaviour management. The school has strict policies on unacceptable behaviour, three instances of which can result in the student being asked to leave the school community.
Flexible Learning
However, the adult learning environment offers interesting solutions to other matters. The VET programs often require students to spend time out of school grounds, at a business. To ensure that students participating in VET do not miss out on valuable class time flexible lesson times are scheduled twice weekly. From lunchtime on Tuesday and Thursday students are no longer required to be on school grounds. This enables them to participate in VET programs, to undertake extra work for particular subjects, eg. drama rehearsals, or to complete coursework and study for any subject.
Uniform
The campus's uniform policy is also not as strict as the middle school's. While students are expected to wear the uniform no punishments are given if this is not the case. This is particularly appropriate for the mature age students attending the campus, as they can be treated as people not as children.
Student Government
The students are also provided with a means to ensure the school is a comfortable learning environment. A prefect system ensures that students are adequately represented on the school council, that their needs are met, and that funds are raised for worthy charities.
