Attendance At School Expectations

UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS

It is expected that all students will be in uniform, as specified in the current Uniform Policy while attending school, at school functions, when representing the school and travelling to and from school.

Students’ are expected to be neat and tidy at all times.  This includes wearing a clean uniform, appropriate shoes.

If for an unavoidable reason a student is unable to meet the uniform requirements on a particular day, then parents/guardians are requested to forward a note in the diary with explanation to the Homegroup Teacher.

When student’s dress does not meet the school requirements and no explanation has been given, parents/guardians will be notified.  Where ongoing non-compliance occurs, disciplinary action may be taken, e.g. a student may not be able to attend certain classes if incorrect footwear is worn and hence must go to the Withdrawal Room.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HOMEWORK POLICY 2009

Following a survey conducted for parents, the homework policy was reviewed and updated late 2005 in line with parent feedback.  Consequently the scope of homework and the recognition of students’ skills have broadened considerably.  This addresses the ‘Futures Connect’ strategies advocated by the Education Department.

Homework is an integral part of secondary schooling.  At Glossop High School Middle Campus, it is used in the main for catching up missed work, completion of class work, reading and revision for tests.  Long-term assignments may be set over a period of time.  This develops a student’s organisational skills and allows flexibility of time use to cater for outside commitments.

If a student has no specific homework set it is expected that they focus on extra reading and portfolio work that relates to the activities the student is involved in out of school including the identification of Key Competencies gained.

The Portfolio work will show recognition of students commitments in the
Community (eg: - coaching, umpiring, church commitments)
Family (eg: - cooking, shopping, house duties, block / family business duties)
Identity / Self (eg: - paid work, sport, dance, music, volunteer work)

The Key Competencies cover: -
KC 1         Collecting, Analysing & Organising Information
KC 2         Communicating Ideas & Information
KC 3         Planning & Organising Activities
KC 4         Working with Others and in Teams
KC 5         Using Mathematical Ideas & Techniques
KC 6         Solving Problems
KC 7         Using Technology
KC 8         Cultural Understandings

It is expected that parents will verify out of school commitments by signing record sheets.  At the middle school level it is expected that students will spend approximately an hour per night.

SENIOR SCHOOL (Year 11/12) HOMEWORK POLICY 2009

Students are expected to spend between 3 - 4 hours on each subject per week.

This is considered essential for a student to successfully complete a subject.
These times will vary according to the competence and diligence of the student, although if parents are concerned that a student is spending either insufficient, or too much, time on homework they should contact the school.

BULLYING AND HARASSMENT

Students at Glossop High School are entitled to feel respected and safe at all times.

What is bullying?
Bullying is a deliberate effort to hurt, threaten or embarrass another person.  It can be:

  1. Verbal:  including name-calling, put downs, making hurtful, sexist or racist remarks, making threats, laughing unkindly.
  2. Physical:  including hitting, tripping, poking, bumping, kicking, throwing objects, stealing objects, pulling faces.
  3. Social:  including ignoring, hiding from, excluding others, sending offensive or threatening text or internet messages.
  4. Psychological: including stalking, dirty looks, spreading rumours, hiding or damaging possessions.

What can I do about it if it happens to me?

* Tell them to stop

* Ignore them and walk away

* Don’t react

* Be confident around the bully

* Joke around with the bully

* Avoid the situation (if possible)

* Tell a friend, teacher or parent

8. Don’t retaliate

9. Complete a harassment report

* Stay in a group – safety in numbers

* Don’t show your emotions

* With the support of a friend or trusted adult discuss with the bully how he/she makes you feel

What should I do if I see someone being bullied?
It is never acceptable to be a bystander of bullying.  Your inaction only further encourages the bully.  Instead:

  1. Let the  bully know they are being a  bully and that the incident will be reported.
  2. Do not get physically involved unless you need to prevent someone from being harmed.

Remember – reporting a bully is not “dobbing” … it is the right thing to do!

What will happen if I am caught bullying or harassing?
The staff and students at Glossop High School takes bullying and harassment very seriously.  If you have behaved in this way you may be involved in mediation with the other person/s, counselling, receive a formal harassment warning or if extremely serious or repeated situations occur you could be suspended from school.

WHAT DO I DO IF…

I am late to school?

Report to Student Reception and complete data entry into EDSAS data for records.

I am absent?

On the day you return, a note explaining your absence should be given to your Homegroup Teacher.  A phone notice of absence will be transferred from the Office to the teacher.

I become ill at school?

Notify your subject teacher and obtain permission to go to Student Reception Sick Bay.

I lose something?

Check with Student Reception where lost property is stored.
Report any losses to your Homegroup or subject teacher.  They may decide to use the Daily Bulletin to help in locating missing items.  Clothing and equipment that is named can easily be returned to you.

I can’t do sport?

A note must be given to the sport teacher and you must still be present at the lesson/venue, though not required to participate.

I have to leave class early?

Where possible, dental and medical appointments should be made out of school time.  Students should bring a note from their parents/guardians to the Homegroup Teacher who will sign the note and record the details.  You should sign out at Student Reception data counter before leaving school.

I need to miss a day at school?

Any requests for time away from school must be made by your parents/guardians to the Principal or Deputy Principal in writing or by phone.  Early departure for holidays and late returns to school are not encouraged.

I am absent for a long time?

The Homegroup Teacher should be contacted to arrange work to be sent to you.  A medical certificate should be sent to the School, or given to your Homegroup Teacher on your return.  Written requests for exemptions from school for up to 4 weeks can be obtained from the Principal.

I can’t wear uniform or the correct shoes?

Students should bring a note from the parents/guardians to the Homegroup Teacher who will sign the note and record the details.

ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS:

All students, regardless of their age are expected to attend school every day, except where sickness or other unavoidable circumstances arise. Research has clearly established that one of the most important factors in student progress is regular attendance.

If your child is away, on their return, please send a written note with him/her explaining the reason for absence.  This note should be on paper, so that it can be kept for reference by the class teacher. Slips for this purpose are printed in the school diary.

If you have prior knowledge that your child will be absent from school for any reason, please assist by communicating with the teacher before that date, so that appropriate arrangements can be made. When a student will be absent for a longer period of time, eg a family holiday, an exemption from school may be required. Please contact the front office to organise.
NOTE:  Attendance is required by law until a student turns 17 years of age.
