Listing

Make a list of similarities and differences between flying foxes and birds, and between flying foxes and foxes. Use such headings as food, homes, body covering, motion, classification, body structure etc.

What if

• the mother bird had not looked after Stellaluna?
• Stellaluna had landed near another animal or its house?
• the birds had been a different species eg. owls, kookaburra, magpie, parrot etc. and what names could the birds have been called then?
• Stellaluna's mother had not found her?

Dramatise

Improvise/create dialogue for conversations between Stellaluna and the birds. (If you have the CD-ROM, play this after improvising to see how the children's ideas compare with the dialogue on the CD-ROM).

You could use a Stellaluna puppet/doll and bird puppets to help in the improvisation.

Technology

Design a model for Stellaluna. Use writing and drawing to show how the model will work. Think about the materials you will need. Construct the model.

Experiment with dropping pieces of paper to see how they fly eg. make folds in the paper to see what happens. Make a paper Stellaluna. Have a flying competition to see which ones work the best. Discuss why.
