As part of the biennial The Ipswich Festival of Children's Literature held in 1999 a Writers' Camp for talented young people was conducted. Authors Andy Griffiths , Brian Caswell and Christine Harris led writing workshops as part of the two-day residential camp. Lesley Reece, Director of the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre, led a special workshop on writing and illustrating picture books for older readers. During the camp the students also had the opportunity to mingle with the other authors and illustrators in residence at the festival and join with them in a special formal literary dinner.During the two days, the authors provided insights into their own sources of inspiration and development as well as providing guidelines and instruction for the students. Lesley Reece supplied a unique opportunity for the campers in conducting a workshop which involved viewing Gary Crew's original manuscript and Shaun Tan's resulting artwork from "The Viewer".
Twenty-five talented primary school writers from the Ipswich and West Moreton school districts were selected to attend the camp. They came from both state and non-state schools.
