Creating a web site

  1. Look at many other sites to help you design your own.
  2. If you are on Connect-Ed decide whether you want to edit the generic homepage or design your own from scratch.
  3. Plan it on paper.

What to use to create a website:

What to use to upload your website:

If you are on Connect-Ed then you can follow the instructions in the manual to upload the files. However I found that I could only send one file at a time. I prefer to use a file transfer program such as WS-FTP on a PC so that I can upload a whole directory at a time.

You can download WS-FTP from various sites on the net such as tucows. Try http://tucows.powerup.com.au/ which is in Brisbane or look for another site at http://www.tucows.com/Australia.html

Choose your format eg. WIN95/98, look in Network tools for FTP and Archie, follow the link and scroll down to WS-FTP LE. This is freeware that you can download. You will need another bit of software to unzip it such as Winzip. If you don't already have this it can also be downloaded from TUCOWS in General Tools, Compression Utilities.

Once you have WS-FTP, when you first start it this screen will be displayed:

You will need to choose a profile name, enter the host name, leave the host type as auto detect, put in your user ID, and then your password. If it is on a secure computer, you may choose to save the password.

Then click on the start-up tab and you can put in the path to your files in the Initial Start-up directory eg. c:\Program Files\Claris Corp\Claris Home Page 2.0\rosewood

Then go to the advanced tab.
This can be critical depending on how you are uploading files.
If it is to a Connect-Ed site from a computer on the Connect-Ed network you need to tick the passive transfer box. If it is from another server, then you won't need this. You can send files to connect-ed sites from other servers.

When this is done, click OK and you will connect to the site. You can then send your files over either in bulk or singly by clicking on the right arrow. If singly then you need to open the www folder and transfer your web pages into this directory.

The exisitng files on Connect-Ed sites ie. the generic homepage, are sinamainz.htm, sinasidez.htm and welcome.html These files can be transferred the other way to your computer if you wish to edit them in one of the web page programs and then send them back up. You only need to edit welcome.html. The other files are part of the frame format of this site. The images won't be seen on your comuputer as they refer to files elsewhere, but it still works when you put it back up. This can be a bit tricky.

Personally I think it is better and simpler to create you own website from scratch and name the first file index.html When this is sent up to your website, then it overrides the existing pages and appears as the default on your site.
