Old Sydney Town
by Jason 6B |
| On Wednesday, the 5th of May, 6B, 5/6W and 5R went on an excursion to Old Sydney Town. We went there to learn about British Colonisation of Australia. We went by coach. It took us one and a half hours to get there. | |
| When we arrived we had great fun! We first ate our recess and played on the equipment. Then we walked around because Year 5 had their tour first. We came across two soldiers who showed us how to fire muskets. They were very loud. We were told how people would be punished and how they caught a convict. | |
| Next we saw the flogging of a prisoner who had tried to escape several times. He was whipped by a cat o’ nine tails. |
|
|
Also we went to buy some souveniers at the shops. We also saw how they arrested a woman; they blew up everything! |
| By then it was time for our tour. Our tour guide's name was Thomas Taber and he says he dislikes children but I think he is just pretending! He first showed us the graves and how the gravedigger made them. He didn’t engrave them neatly; that’s because he never went to school! | |
| After that we went to a church made by convicts. It has no roof! The walls were made of sandstaone and the seats were made of logs, yet they had their weekly Sunday mass there. | |
| We were then shown how convict women would get married! Men had to throw their perfumed handkerchief at a woman’s feet and if the woman picked it up, she was married! | |
| Our next stop was the windmill. We got to walk up to the top of the windmill and see the wooden gears and cogwheels at work. Next we visited the Bond store. This is where all the food and drinks are kept. The walls were really thick to keep thieves out. Almost everything was kept in barrels. | |
| Last but not least we went to the courthouse where thieves or convicts were punished. Mr Taber showed us how they punished men and women in a cruel way. And of course, we went to buy souveniers. This was the best excursion ever. It was great. | |
