Earthquakes
Sometimes a big layer of rock that is deep, deep down slips and rubs against another layer of rock. This causes a shaking and rumbling called an earthquake. Scientists learn something about what's inside the earth by using special earthquake instruments. What's inside the earth is a riddle. Nature gives us some hints when volcanos shoot out melted rock and when there are earthquakes. It lets us know that in some places there is solid rock, and in other places there is iron. But we still need to know a lot more than we do.
Volcanos
In a volcano, melted rock and gas are all mixed up together. Deep inside the earth the hard rock presses against the melted rock and gas from all sides and keeps it contained. But if the melted rock and gas comes near the surface of the earth, some of the gas sometimes escapes through a hole and pushes some of the melted rock out with it. You could say that a volcano is a bit like a bottle of soft drink or that a bottle of soft drink is a bit like a volcano.
