There have been some discussions about whether Australia should be a republic. Many people believe that it is time to have an Australian head of state, so they want a republic. On the other jand, the "No" people want to keep the monarchy because the British colonised Australia and if they vote "Yes" it would be an insult. But the "Yes" side argue that the Queen is not Australian and lives far away from Australia and shouldn't be head of state of Australia. In contrast to this, many people think that the present system is safe and stable and shouldn't be fixed because it isn't broken. But the "Yes" supporters claim that Australians will be proud for not having a Queen who also rules other countries. At the same time, many people believe that it is not fair because Australians don't have a say in who the president will be. On the other hand, the "Yes" people think that the idea of hereditary power offends Australians' egalitarian spirit. In contrast to this, the "No" people say that it is bad for the president and the prime minister to have the power to sack each other, so they don't want a republic. Many people think that we should show other countries that Australia can be independent and not depend on Britain so they are voting "Yes". Although this is probably true, the "No" people say that our proven constitution shouldn't be replaced by any experiment. After looking at both sides, I recommend that Australia should become a republic. |
