THE CHICKENS

Between eight to ten chickens are kept at the school; their main purpose to eat the left over food from the children's lunches.

The chicken coop became part of Year 6/7 Technology Project. The class petitioned the Principal, wrote submissions to the school providing details of research and the advantages of recycling food scraps and estimating the number of eggs that could be provided to the Tuckshop on a regular basis.

Once approved, the class set about finding a builder, discussing plans for the pen, ordering materials and assisting with the construction.

The children contacted a breeder and visited his facilities to select chickens that were good eaters and layers.

A parent inoculated the hens against any likely diseases and the children fed, collected the eggs, compared their laying to the information provided by literature, and stored and delivered the eggs to the Tuckshop.

Bedding material for the chickens was made from shredding waste paper from the classrooms. When soiled the children removed the paper to use on the gardens, in the compost bins and worm farms.

The children were delighted by the comment from the school cleaner who said that there was a noticeable difference in the amount of rubbish being sent away.
